A Day In Philly And a Massive Duck 10/1/25 6:30pm

Hey! Sorry this update didn't come sooner, but I've been quite busy with work and other stuff (like being lazy). But anyway...

DUCK!

A computer generated 3D image of a blocky looking milard duck surrounded by darkness. A computer generated 3D image of the duck seen in the first image, with several smaller ducks standing on it's bill and reacting in various different ways.

Now, some of you might be thinking to yourself, "why?" Well, I was originally mapping using some cover art for a random album I found on Bandcamp as a reference, got up to here, and in my sleep deprived state I audibly went "...Hey, that kinda looks like a duck..." And thus, I made it duck.

A computer generated 3D image of a rectangular slab of ground, with to square openings attached to it. The slab would become the bill and the openings would become the eyes. A headshot of the duck seen before.

...So, I went to Philly.

Two high buildings in the distance. A church in the near distance, with a small parking lot slightly obscuring the view. Street art of an abstract creatures saying random things. A watertower with a yellow smiley-face on it.

Again, you think to yourself, "Why?" with slightly more of an answer implied in what provoked your question. You beg and plead, hoping that the pixels you see in front of you give you a clear and understandable answer. Well, it was an incredibly belated birthday present.

It was also there that I got to see Stereolab live! This was also the first concert I've ever really been to (one that isn't a local christian band playing in a church or something). The original plan was for us to see the Liberty Bell, but we missed our shot to see it, but we'll see it some day. Similarly, I originally planned to see SWANS live, but I realized how loud it would be (plus, my parents probably wouldn't like them). But, when looking at other bands that were playing at the same venue, Union Transfer, I saw that Stereolab were playing in the same month we were expecting to go, so I chose them!

I liked the show. The opener, Memorials, did a great job and I'm a little ashamed I hadn't heard of them before. One of the band mates played both drums and guitar, and the other would do vocals, (triangle, sometimes) keyboard and saxaphone! And when Stereolab actually began, they did very, very good. I didn't recognise every track they played, but what I did know, I thought they did a good job playing. They mainly played stuff from IHOMF, but also did two from ETK (Cybele's Reverie, Monstre Sacre) and two from D&L (The Flower Called Nowhere, Miss Modular). They did an encore as well, but we couldn't stay for that, so we left (which kinda sucked cause they started playing Percolator as we left. I love that track!).

I didn't get any footage of the opener, sadly, but I did get some for Stereolab. I can't show you the footage, for reasons that I think are obvious, but here's some snapshots of it, plus a shirt I got at the venue:

Wide shot of band proforming. Tim Gane playing guitar and Andy Ramsay playing drums. Laetitia Sadier fiddling with her moog and Xavi Muñoz doo-doodling his bass. Joe Watson twiddling his knobs. A shirt with the art from their 'Stunning Debut Album' on it.

As for the city itself? Well, we certainly weren't in the nice part of philly. And given we're planning on going there again, I think I'll hold out on voicing any opinions for the time being.

Oh, and uhh... Go birds, I guess (I fear I'd be shot if I didn't say that).

New shipments have been coming in. This may be some of my last too (that was short lived, huh?), but here's what I got:

7 new CDs. Just a picture of 'Who is William Onyeabor?' by William Onyeabor.

Quite the haul, ay? From the top; Aphex Twin's Donkey Rhubarb is a pretty enjoyable EP; Yowie's Cryptooology is grotesque and incredibly goofy at the same time; CT57's ANIK TELESAT is some very good Caretaker inspired broken transmission; Frasierwave by chris††† (Christ) is some surprisingly decent, if a bit clichéd vaporwave; Solid Pleasure by Yello, while not my favorite by them, is very nice; same goes for Fingerprince by The Residents; and Suicide's self-titled is pretty okay in my opinion.

Which leaves one left... Now you may notice the lone picture of William Onyeabor's Who is William Onyeabor? And you ask "Why?" Once more, you quiver and shake for an answer!

Well, uhh...

The same picture as last time, but with a CD copy of Aphex Twin's 'I Care Because You Do...' is placed over William's face. This is to demonstrate the size difference bettween the two.

I got a vinyl. Now, this wouldn't be a problem if, ya know, I ordered a vinyl copy instead of a CD one, which is exactly what I didn't do. But, beyond that, this is some nice afrobeat if you haven't heard it yet.

And that leads me to the last topic, the website - or, to be more specific, the new navbutton on the website: the SHELF! That's the place where I will put more fleshed out and formal music opinions compared to here. Now, I'm gonna keep talking about music here, but if you want more, go there. But, I will warn you, as of writing, it is still under construction and there isn't even anything there yet. But I'm gonna keep working on it as much I can in this coming week.

So, yeah, that's the update. See ya soon (hopefully)!
